Mindfulness

I was trying to think of ways to remember to be mindful during the day.... I'm going to try to remember not to just ask myself 'what am I doing now', but to ask about each of my senses - what am I seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting....

Hi again! A thought occurred to me, and I wanted to share with you. Writing a blog on meditation and mindfulness may actually be a slight hindrance, since it forces a sort of attachment to memories and feelings. Rather than noting and releasing thoughts, a blogger has to write them down. But then again, maybe it's therapeutic to write stuff down, note progress made, and then move on.

There's an indirect reference to this on a good website. "Sometimes how one makes effort in meditation can be counterproductive. Striving too hard, trying to escape something, clinging to views and ideals, meditating as penance or obligation, and measuring every little bit of progress are some of the things that interfere with meditation. An antidote to this struggle is training the mind to be more at ease with how things are. Rather than trying to organize the conditions of the world, we can cultivate an ability to be relaxed with whatever is happening."

I just found this website a few days ago. There are also hundreds of hours of MP3 recordings of various talks and readings from the Dhammapada etc (by Gil Fronsdal, the translator of a recent version of this book). Lots of great info and resources at this site.

Best wishes, Bob (Cairo, Egypt)

You're probably right about the contradiction of writing a blog about 'stopping thought' so to speak. However, knowing myself fairly well, if I didn't I'm afraid my practices would just fall by the wayside. So, I'll keep my crutch for now. ;-)

I'll certainly check out that website. Ta....
